What Grade 4 students are expected to master
Fourth grade is the first year where a single question can take a student more than a minute of legitimate written work. Multi-digit multiplication and division with remainders both require a recorded method, and that is a genuine change in what mathematics feels like. Students who were fine in Grade 3 by holding everything in their head often struggle here, not because the arithmetic is harder but because they have never had to lay work out.
Fractions also become comparative rather than descriptive. Grade 3 asks which fraction is shaded; Grade 4 asks whether 3/5 is bigger than 5/8, which requires a common denominator or a benchmark argument. Both methods are worth teaching, because benchmarking against 1/2 is much faster and builds the number sense that decimals will need next year.
Where Grade 4 students most often lose marks
Remainders are the classic one. Students find 96 Γ· 7 = 13 r5 correctly and then, in a word problem about how many buses are needed, forget that a remainder means one more bus. The arithmetic is right and the answer is wrong. Practise interpreting the remainder in context, not just producing it.
The second is decimal place value. A student who reads 0.35 as 'point thirty-five' will conclude it is larger than 0.4, because 35 is larger than 4. Insisting on 'thirty-five hundredths' out loud fixes more decimal ordering errors than any amount of extra practice does.
