Line up the decimal point, except when you do not
For addition and subtraction, aligning the decimal points is the whole method, and padding with trailing zeros makes the alignment visible. For multiplication the rule is different: multiply as if the decimal points were not there, then count the total number of decimal places in the question and place the point that many digits from the right. Students who apply the addition rule to multiplication get answers that are wrong by a factor of ten.
Decimals, fractions and percentages are the same idea
A student who sees 0.25, 1/4 and 25% as three unrelated facts will memorise three separate procedures. A student who sees them as one quantity written three ways can convert freely and check their own work. The questions below mix the representations on purpose, and the percentage and fraction worksheets extend the same connection further.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Comparing 0.7 and 0.65 by digit count and concluding that 0.65 is larger.
- Misplacing the decimal point after multiplying, usually by counting only one factor's decimal places.
- Failing to pad with trailing zeros before subtracting, so columns end up misaligned.
- Rounding 3.649 to 3.7 by rounding twice instead of looking at a single deciding digit.
