How to use these multiplication worksheets
Start with the easy questions to confirm fact recall, then move to medium and hard to introduce regrouping and multi-digit work. Students who hesitate on the easy set usually need more fact fluency before long multiplication will stick, because every column in a long multiplication problem depends on instant recall. Filtering by grade gives you a set pitched at one year group; filtering by difficulty gives you a differentiated set for mixed-ability groups sitting in the same room.
From times tables to long multiplication
Grade 3 usually focuses on building the tables to 12 and understanding multiplication as repeated addition or as an array. Grade 4 introduces multiplying a two-digit or three-digit number by a single digit, which is where regrouping first appears. Grade 5 extends this to two-digit by two-digit multiplication and to multiplying decimals. The questions below follow that same progression, so you can see exactly where a student stops being confident.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Forgetting to carry the regrouped digit into the next column, or carrying it but never adding it.
- In long multiplication, not shifting the second partial product one place to the left before adding.
- Confusing multiplication facts with addition facts under time pressure — 7 × 8 answered as 15.
- Dropping a zero when multiplying by 10 or 100, especially with a decimal in the question.
