Division depends on multiplication fluency
Almost every division error in grades 3 to 5 traces back to a shaky multiplication fact rather than to the division algorithm itself. If a student cannot recall that 7 × 6 = 42, they cannot confidently say how many times 7 goes into 45. Before you assign long division practice, check fact recall with the easy questions here — it usually saves a week of reteaching later.
What to do with the remainder
Word problems are where remainders become interesting. Depending on the context, a remainder may need to be dropped, rounded up, or written as a fraction. A question about how many full boxes can be packed rounds down; a question about how many boxes are needed rounds up. Students who can compute a remainder but not interpret it will lose marks on exactly the questions that state assessments favour.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Rounding a remainder up or down without checking what the question is actually asking for.
- Forgetting to bring down the next digit in long division, which shortens the quotient by a place.
- Writing the divisor and dividend the wrong way round, so 45 ÷ 5 is computed as 5 ÷ 45.
- Losing place value by omitting a zero in the quotient when the divisor does not fit into a digit.
