Why Virginia is different
Virginia has run its own standards and assessment system for decades and never moved to the Common Core. The most practical difference is organisational: Virginia groups mathematics into five named strands that stay consistent from elementary school through middle school, so a teacher can track a student across years within the same categories. National materials organised by Common Core domains do not map cleanly onto those strands, which is why Virginia teachers so often end up re-sorting worksheets by hand.

What this course covers in Virginia

Place value, fractions, decimals, percents and integer reasoning. Virginia keeps this as a distinct strand well into the middle grades, where many other states fold it into operations.
Computation and estimation
Operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and integers, with genuine emphasis on estimation as a skill in its own right rather than only as a check on an exact answer.
Measurement and geometry
Perimeter, area, volume, surface area, angle relationships, transformations and coordinate geometry. Combining measurement with geometry in one strand is a Virginia convention worth mirroring in unit tests.
Probability and statistics
Data collection and display, measures of centre, and probability. Virginia gives this more sustained attention across grades than many state frameworks do.
Patterns, functions and algebra
Patterns, expressions, equations, inequalities and the growth of functional thinking. This strand carries students directly into Algebra I and is the strongest early signal of high school readiness.
