Why Virginia is different
Algebra I in Virginia ends in an SOL end-of-course assessment, which gives the course a defined target that a generic Algebra 1 syllabus does not have. Expressions and operations
Simplifying expressions, laws of exponents, radicals, factoring and polynomial operations. Fluency here is assumed by every other topic in the course, so it is worth testing early and repeatedly.
Equations and inequalities
Solving linear equations and inequalities, literal equations, systems, and quadratic equations by multiple methods. Systems in particular appear in both algebraic and graphical form.
Functions
Domain and range, function notation, zeros and intercepts, and comparing linear, quadratic and exponential behaviour. Interpreting what a feature of a graph means in a real context is assessed as heavily as finding it.
Statistics within Algebra I
Scatterplots, curve of best fit, and using a model to make predictions. Virginia keeps this inside Algebra I rather than deferring it, and it is a common gap when teaching from national materials.
