PSSA Math Practice for Pennsylvania Teachers

Printable PSSA math practice for grades 3-8, organised the way Pennsylvania organises its own assessment guidance — by Assessment Anchor and Eligible Content rather than by textbook chapter.

Why Pennsylvania is different

Pennsylvania publishes something most states do not: Assessment Anchors paired with Eligible Content statements that spell out exactly how far a standard is assessed at each grade. This is unusually specific guidance, and it means a PA teacher can know in advance whether a topic will appear and at what depth. Practice built to the Eligible Content is therefore much better targeted than practice built to a broad standard, and it avoids the common problem of teaching a topic well beyond what the assessment actually reaches.

What this course covers in Pennsylvania

Numbers and operations

Place value, fractions, decimals and rational number operations. The Eligible Content statements are specific about number ranges and representations, which makes pitching difficulty far less of a guess.

Algebraic concepts

Patterns, expressions, equations and inequalities, developing into linear relationships in the upper grades. Feeds directly into the Keystone Algebra I exam later.

Geometry

Shape properties, angle relationships, area, surface area, volume and coordinate geometry, including the Pythagorean theorem by grade 8.

Data analysis and probability

Interpreting displays, measures of centre and spread, and probability in the middle grades. A small strand that is easy to leave until too late in the year.

Example questions

Easy1. Round 4,682 to the nearest hundred.
Easy2. What is 3/5 of 45?
Med3. Find the area of a parallelogram with a base of 15 m and a height of 8 m.
Hard4. A box holds 24 crayons. How many full boxes can be filled with 300 crayons, and how many are left over?

Answer key preview

1. 4,700

The tens digit is 8, so the hundreds digit rounds up from 6 to 7.

2. 27

45 / 5 = 9, and 9 x 3 = 27.

3. 120 square metres

Area = base x height = 15 x 8 = 120.

4. 12 full boxes with 12 crayons left over

300 / 24 = 12 remainder 12, since 12 x 24 = 288.

Questions Pennsylvania teachers ask

What are Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content?
They are Pennsylvania documents that sit between the standards and the assessment, describing which content is assessed and to what depth at each grade. They are more specific than the standards themselves and are genuinely useful for planning.
Which grades take the PSSA in mathematics?
Mathematics is assessed in grades 3 through 8. High school mathematics is assessed through the Keystone Exams instead.
Are these actual PSSA items?
No. They are original questions written to Pennsylvania's Eligible Content at comparable rigor. MathQuizily is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Classroom assessment context

Build the assessment, not just the questions

MathQuizily helps teachers move from a topic or standard to a printable math test with answer keys, balanced difficulty, and classroom-ready PDF output.

A useful assessment should make the learning target clear, cover the intended skills, and give the teacher enough information to review the result before students see it. The workflow supports short quizzes, chapter checks, diagnostic tests, homework packets, make-up assessments, and equivalent retake versions.

Choose a grade, topic, curriculum context, and difficulty level. The generated PDF includes a student version and a separate worked answer key, so teachers can print, review, and grade without reformatting questions or building solutions from scratch. No student account is required to create or print a test.
