Why North Carolina is different
North Carolina teaches from its own Standard Course of Study, and the state's assessment calendar shapes how teachers use practice material. Alongside the end-of-grade tests, districts commonly use interim check-ins during the year, which means practice is most useful when it is short, repeatable and cumulative rather than delivered as one large review near the end. The calculator policy also shifts by grade band, so practice that ignores which sections are calculator-inactive can leave students unprepared for the harder half of the test.

What this course covers in North Carolina
Operations and algebraic thinking
Multi-step word problems, patterns and early expression work in the elementary grades, developing into equations and inequalities by middle school. Consistently the largest source of items across grades 3 to 8.
Number and operations with fractions
Equivalence, comparison and the four operations with fractions, then rational numbers including negatives. Fraction division and negative number operations remain the most reliable predictors of later difficulty.
Ratios and proportional relationships
Unit rates, percent problems, scale and proportional reasoning in grades 6 and 7. Heavily weighted in the middle grades and the natural bridge into NC Math 1.
Measurement, geometry and data
Area, volume, surface area, coordinate geometry, angle relationships, and interpreting data displays. Often the strand where formula recall rather than reasoning is the real gap.
