What Grade 3 students are expected to master
The single biggest shift in third grade is that multiplication and division become the organising idea for almost everything else. Students are expected to know their facts within 100 fluently enough that a fact does not slow down a two-step problem. If a child is still counting up by sevens on their fingers in April, the fact work is not finished, no matter how well they do on the rest of the curriculum.
The second shift is fractions. Grade 3 introduces fractions as numbers on a number line rather than as pictures of pizza. This is where a lot of later fraction confusion starts: a student who only ever sees 3/4 as three shaded quarters of a circle will struggle in Grade 4 when asked to place 3/4 between 0 and 1. Practise both representations.
How to use these worksheets in a Grade 3 class
Start with the easy set as a warm-up and watch the clock rather than the answers. Third graders who take longer than about five seconds per multiplication fact are recalling by calculation, not memory, and they will run out of working memory on the two-step problems later in the year. That is a fluency issue and needs short daily practice, not a longer worksheet.
The medium and hard questions are deliberately mixed across topics, because tests are mixed. Students who can do a page of twenty multiplication questions but freeze when a multiplication question appears next to a fraction question have learned the page, not the skill. Interleaving is uncomfortable and it is what makes the learning stick.
