Why California is different

California districts choose between two high school pathways, and a large number teach the integrated one: Math 1, Math 2 and Math 3 instead of Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. For those classrooms an Algebra 1 workbook is the wrong shape. Integrated Math 1 carries coordinate geometry and statistics alongside its algebra, so a resource built for a traditional Algebra 1 course omits whole strands while over-serving others. What this course covers in California

Linear relationships and equations

Solving and graphing linear equations, inequalities and systems, and rearranging formulas. The largest algebraic block in the course and the closest overlap with traditional Algebra 1.

Functions and sequences

Function notation, domain and range, comparing linear with exponential growth, and arithmetic and geometric sequences treated as functions in their own right.

Coordinate geometry within the course

Distance and midpoint, slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines, and proving simple geometric facts using coordinates. Students meet this in Math 1 rather than a year later.

Statistics within the course

Describing distributions, comparing data sets, scatterplots, lines of best fit and interpreting correlation. Integrated through the year rather than saved for a final unit.

Med3. Solve the system by elimination: 3x + 2y = 16 and x - 2y = 0
Hard4. An exponential function passes through the points (0, 5) and (1, 15). Write its equation.

Answer key preview

1. 7

g(4) = 4 - 3 = 1, then f(1) = 2(1) + 5 = 7.

2. 10 units

The legs are 6 and 8, so the distance is the square root of 36 + 64 = 100, which is 10.

3. (4, 2)

Adding gives 4x = 16, so x = 4, and then 2y = 4, giving y = 2.

4. y = 5(3)^x

The initial value is 5, and 15 / 5 = 3 gives the growth factor.
