Why California is different
California's assessment has two parts that behave very differently. One is computer-adaptive, so the difficulty moves with the student and every student meets items they cannot do. The other is a performance task: an extended, multi-step problem set built around a single scenario, where students carry information forward from one part to the next. Ordinary worksheets prepare students for neither. A class can be fluent in every individual skill and still perform poorly on a task that requires sustaining one context across several connected questions.

What this course covers in California
The performance task is the differentiator
An extended scenario with connected parts, where an early error propagates. Practice that is a list of unrelated questions does not build the habit of carrying a context forward, which is precisely what the task rewards.
Adaptive testing changes what a hard item means
Because difficulty adjusts, a strong student will still meet questions they cannot answer. Students benefit from hearing this in advance so they do not read normal test behaviour as failure mid-test.
Ratios, proportions and rational numbers
Rates, percentages, scaling and operations with rational numbers across grades 6 to 8. Consistently the heaviest content area and the one that most affects performance task work.
Expressions, equations and functions
Writing and solving equations, linear relationships, and function reasoning by grade 8. Modelling a described situation matters as much as solving a given equation.
Geometry, measurement and data
Area, volume, surface area, angle relationships, the Pythagorean theorem, and interpreting data displays including variability in the upper grades.
