Subtracting a negative is adding

The single most useful reframing in this topic is that subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its positive counterpart. Written out, 5 − (−3) becomes 5 + 3 = 8. On a number line, subtracting means moving left, but the negative sign reverses that direction, so the movement is to the right. Students who learn the rule without the number line picture tend to apply it inconsistently once questions get longer.

Sign rules for multiplication are not the same as for addition

In multiplication and division, two negatives give a positive and mixed signs give a negative. In addition, two negatives give a more negative result. Because the phrase 'two negatives make a positive' gets repeated loosely, students frequently apply it to addition and conclude that −4 + −6 = 10. Keeping the two rule sets visibly separate is worth more than any amount of extra drill.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Applying the multiplication sign rule to addition, so −4 + −6 is answered as 10.
  • Losing a negative sign when copying an expression to the next line of working.
