Why New York is different
New York revised its mathematics standards into the Next Generation Learning Standards after a lengthy review of the state's earlier Common Core-based version. The revision moved a number of expectations between grades, clarified others, and removed some that teachers had flagged as developmentally misplaced. Because the changes are selective rather than wholesale, they are easy to miss — a national worksheet pack will look approximately right while placing several topics a year off from where New York now teaches them.

What this course covers in New York
Grade placement was adjusted, not rewritten
The most practical consequence of the revision is that some expectations sit a grade earlier or later than in the national standards. Tests generated for New York follow the state's placement, which is where imported materials most often go wrong.
Number and operations through the elementary grades
Place value, multi-digit operations, and fraction reasoning, moving into rational number operations by the middle grades. Fraction division and negative numbers are frequent points of confusion for materials written to a different sequence.
Ratios, proportions and early algebra
Ratio and rate reasoning in grades 6 and 7, expressions and equations, then linear relationships in grade 8. This is the pipeline into Algebra I and the Regents that follows it.
Geometry and measurement
Area, volume, surface area, angle relationships, transformations and the Pythagorean theorem in grade 8. New York expects reasoning about why a formula works, not only its application.
Statistics and probability
Data displays, measures of centre and spread, sampling, and probability in the upper middle grades. Reliably tested and reliably rushed at the end of the year.
