Michigan 8th Grade Math Practice (PSAT 8/9 Style)
Grade 8 math practice written for Michigan's actual testing situation, where the state assessment is a college-readiness test in a different format from the M-STEP students took in earlier grades.
Why Michigan is different
This is the sharpest break in any state's testing sequence. Michigan eighth graders do not sit an M-STEP mathematics test like they did the year before — they sit a college-readiness assessment instead. The mathematics is still grade-appropriate, but almost everything around it changes: the item style is closer to a college entrance exam, the questions are more heavily contextual, sections are strictly timed, and calculator rules differ from what students are used to. A generic grade 8 worksheet prepares the content and none of the format.

What this course covers in Michigan
Heart of algebra
Linear equations, inequalities and systems, presented far more often as worded scenarios than as bare equations. Students who can solve but cannot translate lose marks here first.
Problem solving and data analysis
Ratios, rates, percentages, proportional reasoning and reading data from tables and graphs. This is the largest content area and the most sensitive to careless reading.
Passport to advanced math
Introductory work with quadratic and other nonlinear expressions, function notation and equivalent forms. Lighter at this level than in later exams but present.
Geometry and pacing
Angle relationships, triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, area and volume. Just as important is pacing practice, since timed sections are new to most Michigan eighth graders.

1 = -2x + 9, so -2x = -8 and x = 4.
3. 25 girls
The ratio has 8 parts, so each part is 5 students, and 5 x 5 = 25.
4. x = 10 or x = -4
Either x - 3 = 7, giving x = 10, or x - 3 = -7, giving x = -4.
